Wetherspoon counts out smoking in Glasgow pub
JD Wetherspoon reopened The Counting House pub in Glasgow yesterday following a £100,000 revamp to convert it into a completely non-smoking venue.
Manager Stuart Coxshall said he believed the people of Glasgow would welcome the move. “More and more people prefer to drink and eat in a smoke-free environment and I’m pleased that The Counting House will be able to offer this facility to its customers,” he said.
The pub, which first opened in 1996 and is one of the largest in Scotland, has completed the revamp shortly after the company issued a trading statement saying like for like sales had fallen by 2 per cent in properties which had banned smoking.
Despite this, the company will continue its strategy of opening all new pubs as non-smoking and converting the other 600 plus to non-smoking over a period of time. All its Scottish pubs will be non-smoking by April 2006.
A spokesperson told Leisure Opportunities that Wetherspoon had expected sales to drop initially – as was seen in New York and Ireland following the implementation of smoking bans – but that smoke-free pubs were a good thing long-term.
Separately, Wetherspoon has also withdrawn its application for a 24-hour licence for its Leeds Railway site and said it will not be making any further 24-hour applications, though the company has declined to explain the move. Details: www.jdwetherspoon.co.uk
