Worcester park restoration receives funding boost
Gheluvelt Park in Worcester is set to be transformed after the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) and the Big Lottery Fund (BIG) awarded £803,500 towards its restoration.
The park first opened in 1922 to commemorate the Battle of Gheluvelt in 1914, which saw the Worcestershire Regiment save Channel ports from enemy occupation. Under the restoration plans, the park will be returned to its original design, while a new play area and a water area will be created. Gardens at the park will also be enhanced as part of the scheme, which will also see the park tell the story of the battle.
The local community will be given the chance to take part in the restoration project through the training of specialist skills, including gardening. John Taylor, the head of Big Lottery Fund's West Midlands region, said: "Many parks need a helping hand to be restored to their former glory and today's investment will help to transform Gheluvelt Park into a community space that can be enjoyed by locals and visitors alike."
Anne Jenkins, head of the HLF in the West Midlands, added: "Parks are special places that enrich our lives and contribute to the well-being of communities across the country." The park recently received the Green Flag Award, the national standard for parks, for a second successive year.
