Work begins on Amber Valley PFI scheme
A ground breaking ceremony took place at the new Heanor Leisure Centre in Derbyshire last week, signalling the beginning of construction work on the Amber Valley Leisure Centre PFI project.
The project signals the beginning of work on a £22m design, build, operate and finance initiative between Amber Valley Borough Council and management company DC Leisure, in partnership with Barclays Bank.
The scheme also includes the demolition and rebuilding of the Alfreton and Ripley Leisure Centres.
Once complete, the three new leisure centres will each boast 25m swimming pools, teaching pools, fitness and aerobic suites, multi-purpose rooms and changing rooms.
Ripley will also see a new sports hall, while the Heanor sports hall and Alfreton indoor bowls hall will both be refurbished.
DC Leisure will manage the sites on a 32-year contract.
Kirk Monk, leisure partnership manager at Amber Valley Borough Council, said: “The Amber Valley leisure centres are at the heart of the community and provide a range of services and activities which encourage inclusive participation beyond recreational and sporting use.
“The new facilities will provide an even greater range of high quality, affordable health and leisure opportunities for local people. Moreover, they will meet the aspirations of the serious athlete as well as the needs of a wide range of community groups, child care and social provision.”
Designed by Pozzoni Design Group and being built by Carillion, the three new centres will take 22 months to complete.
