Work begins on Dorchester skate park
Work has got underway to build a new £190,000 permanent skate park in Dorchester, Dorset, following years of fundraising and campaigning by local young people.
Poole-based skate park specialist, Maverick, has been appointed to design and build the new facility, which will be built opposite the town's police station and is expected to be ready to use in February 2009. The Dorchester Skate Park Committee has raised £40,000 for the project with the support of Dorchester Police, West Dorset District Council (WDDC), Dorchester Town Council (DTC) and members from Dorset Community Action.
WDDC contributed £72,000 towards the scheme, of which £67,000 came through a Big Lottery Fund grant, while DTC invested a further £72,000. The Dorset Youth Opportunity/Capital Fund also contributed £20,000. Leader of WDDC, Robert Gould, said: "The district council is leasing the site to the town council for a nominal amount as we are committed to providing opportunities for young people. This project is an important addition to facilities for young people across West Dorset."
