Work on new Oswestry centre underway
Work has got underway on the construction of the new £7.6m Oswald Park Active Lifestyle Centre in Oswestry, Shropshire, after a ground-breaking ceremony was held on 20 March.
Designed by Michael Hyde and Associates, the new complex is being built by local firm Frank Galliers and will replace the town's existing facilities at the College Road site, which is more than 40 years old. Plans for the new Oswald Park centre include a 25m swimming pool, a learner pool, a multi-use sports hall and a function hall, as well as a fitness suite, refreshment facilities and a crèche.
Oswestry Borough Council (OBC), together with Sport England, is funding the scheme, and is also looking to create new football pitches, a multi-use games area and a BMX park as part of future developments at the centre, which is expected to be completed by November 2010. OBC hopes that the new facility will provide a lasting sporting legacy for the area, although will be handing over control of the scheme to Shropshire Council from 1 April following the creation of the new unitary authority, which will incorporate OBC along with five other local authorities.
