Work starts on new Paignton youth facility
A turf-cutting ceremony has been held by Torbay Council to mark the start of construction work on a new multi-million pound facility for young people in Paignton, Devon.
Reading-based Interserve has been appointed by the authority to build the venue, which will see the Grade II-listed Parkfield House transformed into an "Olympic youth hub". The Big Lottery Fund (BIG) has provided more than £4.8m as part of the government's myplace initiative towards the scheme, which will include a new BMX track, climbing walls and a skate park.
A media suite and a sports hall and theatre complex will also form part of the facility, along with accommodation units in a bid to help attract families from across the UK. Torbay mayor Nick Bye said: "This is a great opportunity to put Paignton on the map for world class facilities for young people. It will give young people more opportunities to enjoy positive and healthy activities."
The new Parkfield complex is due to be completed in September 2011, although outdoor facilities will be made available as soon as they are built beforehand.
