Work to begin on £2.7m sports centre
Construction is scheduled to begin this month on the new, £2.7m skate park and extreme sports centre in Aberdeen’s beach area in Scotland.
Featuring 18,000sq ft (1,670sq m) of indoor skateboard and in-line BMX area, other facilities at the venue will include a regional climbing centre of excellence, a healthy eating café, two band practice studios, a recreation area with pool tables and DJ equipment, a visitor centre and four sports retail units.
The centre will be situated on Aberdeen’s beach front area on a derelict site near to the Patio Hotel.
Scheduled to open in September 2006, the entire development will be run as a not-for-profit company.
A charity – Transition Extreme – was established to raise the funds needed to build the venue with financing coming from a variety of sources, including £1.26m being provided by the council, £500,000 from bank loans and a further £150,000 donated by SportScotland.
Neil Stevenson, chief executive of Transition Extreme, said: “This is an exciting community project for Aberdeen, delivering significant benefits and creating a major visitor attraction.” Details: www.transition-extreme.com
