French Rugby Federation commits to 2023 World Cup bid

Bernard Laporte, the recently-installed president of the French rugby Federation (FFR), has made his second big decision in a week and committed to the nation submitting a bid to host the 2023 Rugby World Cup.

Laporte revealed his hand during a meeting with World Rugby chair Bill Beaumont and chief executive Brett Gosper.

“The FFR’s candidature for the Rugby World Cup 2023 was a point of discussion and I reaffirmed the commitment of the federation and all of French rugby to this project,” he said.

“Through our candidature, we aim to showcase France’s wonderful major event credentials to host the most beautiful event in world rugby.”

He added that the full bid project would be launched on 1 June 2017.

Former French national coach Laporte was only appointed as president on 3 December, but he has already made the decision to scrap plans to build an 82,000-capacity rugby stadium in Paris, which was being lined up as one of the venues for the tournament of France won the bid.

France will now go head-to-head with Ireland and South Africa as the three nations vie to host the tournament in seven year’s time.
