Burst training has been proven to develop the cardiovascular system and burns fat calories more effectively than long duration low intensity workouts.

When scientists compared traditional extended cardio workouts of 30-60 minutes duration with burst training sessions of 20-60 seconds duration, they found that just 60 seconds of burst training replaces 15 minutes of traditional aerobic workout.

Supporting this, a separate study found that just 8 minutes of burst training spread out over a week at the correct intensity, provided 100 per cent improvement in cardiovascular readings.

Bursts should be at near maximum intensity and last for up to 60 seconds. If the client cannot sustain this maximum intensity throughout the full minute, shorter bursts adding up to 60 seconds can be separated by rest periods not exceeding the burst duration.

Manufactured from lightweight aluminium in the US, the X-iser is a great tool for effective burst training and is easily transportable between clients.

The X-iser was initially developed for elite sportsmen and functional fitness coaches.

The specialist hydraulics facilitate a high-frequency stepping action. The key is to perfect your technique so that your lower body is moving at speed whilst the trunk is stabilised (300+ steps in one minute for an elite athlete).

Advanced users will add upper body movements, maybe with dumbbells, to maximise major muscle usage.

You can purchase the X-iser in the UK from Proactive Health. Prices start from around £300 excluding VAT and shipping. Visit www.proactive-health.co.uk or call 0800 434 6170 for more information.
