YMCA to re-run kids' fitness course for BME women
YMCAfit is to re-run a free kids' fitness instructor course to get more women from black and minority ethnic (BME) communities working in the fitness industry and participating in physical activity.
The course is the fourth of five government-funded programmes to run since November 2008, aimed at unemployed women from Bangladeshi, Pakistani or Somali communities in London's Newham and Tower Hamlets areas. The 10-week scheme offers BME women the chance to become a qualified kids' fitness instructor and is the second time it has run following its success in February 2009.
The course - called YMCA Kids' Fitness Play & Games Instructor - will begin on 1 June, and is designed to equip women with the skills to plan and teach exercise classes for children, as well as monitor changes to their fitness levels and wellbeing. Each participant is supported by a mentor, and once qualified receive help finding a job or to source further training. The courses, which include three YMCA Gym Instructor Level 2 schemes, are co-financed by the Tower Hamlets Council, Newham Council and the European Social Fund. The final gym instructor course will be run in October 2009.
"With spiralling obesity rates for both adults and children in Britain, the need to develop an army of health professionals to help improve the health of our nation has never been greater," said Rebecca Bridges, YMCAfit project manager. "We are delighted with the success of the course, which has so far seen 45 women train as fitness professionals, and we hope many of them will now pursue careers in the fitness industry to begin to address the imbalance and to act as mentors for their own communities."
