YMCAfit training course targets BME women
Fitness training provider YMCAfit has launched a landmark training scheme in London for Black, Asian and minority ethnic women (BME).
The project – funded by the European Social Fund and supported by the London Development Agency – aims to tackle the under-representation of BME women in the exercise and fitness sector.
It is open to BME women aged 16 and above who are unemployed (or working less than 16 hours a week) and living in London.
The professional training programme will lead to nationally recognised qualifications, as either a gym or aerobics instructor, within a supported environment which is sensitive to different cultural needs and heritage.
Trainees who successfully complete their programme will receive help in finding a job in fitness, leisure, health and community activities.
Denise Page, YMCAfit’s curriculum director, said: “Black and minority ethnic women suffer disproportionately poor health status and much of this can be attributed to low levels of physical activity.
“Passionate in our belief that it is everyone’s right to be able to access the health benefits of physical activity, YMCAfit developed this new scheme based on research that shows physical activity delivered in a culturally relevant way by recognised role models from within the community is more likely to inspire others into exercise participation and adherence.” Details: www.ymcafit.org.uk
