YTB to tender for ‘Bollywood Oscars'
Yorkshire Tourist Board (YTB) has put forward a bid to the International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) to host the 2007 IIFA Awards in Yorkshire and Humber.
YTB chief executive David Andrews and bid director Zulfi Karim spearheaded the move, which could generate an estimated £10m for the region.
It is hoped that Indian cinema could open up a film tourism market in the region, with committed fans being inclined to visit their favourite film locations.
The four-day IIIFA Awards – the Bollywood equivalent of the Oscars – traditionally take place in June and kick off with the world premiere of the year’s biggest Bollywood film, which is attended by some of the biggest names in Indian cinema.
On the second day of the event, the attending Bollywood stars will play a cricket match against professional sportsmen.
The official IIFA Awards will take place on the penultimate day, with the final day of events devoted to regional location trips for the visiting film production crews.
The IIFA will announce who will host the 2007 awards at a media conference in June at the 2006 IIFA Awards, which are being held in Dubai.
The IIFA weekend attracts between 15,000 and 20,000 visitors, and around 8,000 people stay for an average of three nights. Details: www.ytb.org.uk
