York gym in line for £540k extension
York's Energise gym facility is in line to benefit from a £540,000 expansion on an "invest to save" basis if the plans are given the green light by the local authority on 6 December.
A report presenting a business case for the investment on behalf of York High School is to go before the City of York Council's (CYC) cabinet for approval.
If given the go ahead, the 60-station gym facility will be expanded from 195sq m (2,099sq ft) by a further 219sq m (2,357sq ft) and enable more residents to use it, either on a membership or a pay-as-you-go basis.
The scheme follows the addition of a swimming pool at Energise in December 2009, which has helped the centre to achieve a "stable turnover" of £1.38m a year.
CYC cabinet member for leisure, culture and social inclusion Sonja Crisp said: "Energise offers fantastic value for money so we need to ensure gym users and members continue to receive this excellent service."
Energise manager Paul Bickle added: "This is the next logical step in improving and extending what has become a very popular community leisure facility."
If approved, work could commence in spring and have an anticipated completion date of October 2012.
