Yorkshire Dales visitor centre to reopen
The Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority’s (YDNPA) visitor centre in Grassingotn will reopen to the public on 21 March.
A four-month refurbishment has introduced new interpretation displays featuring the local countryside and a new exhibition, called ‘Hay time in the Dales’, takes a look back at traditional farming methods.
There will also be a video display explaining how the agricultural landscape in the region has changed over time – including a prediction of what the area might look like in the future if global warming is allowed to increase.
Work on the centre has also made it more environmentally friendly, with natural light and natural ventilation being introduced into building.
The new-look interior also has more retail space in an attempt to increase secondary spend.
YDNPA’s interpretation officer, Karen Griffiths, said: “There will be a new area concentrating on farming, with interactive panels explaining how the landscape in Wharfedale has changed over time.
“It will also show the difference between traditional and modern farming methods.
“In addition, there will be a prediction of what the area might look like in 2080 if climate change goes unchecked. It’s quite a frightening picture of a dry, barren landscape.”
