£10m restoration for Althorp
Althorp House in Northamptonshire, ancestral home of the Spencer family since the early 16th century, is undergoing a £10m facelift.
Building conservation and restoration specialist William Anelay has been awarded the contract to carry out phases of restoration work at the house. The project - due to last around a year - will involve a programme of re-roofing, stonework replacements and extensive refurbishment of the mathematical tiles which face much of the house. Funding for the work came from a sale of historic Spencer family heirlooms held by auctioneers Christies earlier this year, which raised a total of £21.1m.
Althorp, set in a 14,000 acre country estate, was originally a red brick Tudor building but its appearance was radically altered in the 18th century when the architect Henry Holland was commissioned to make extensive changes. Home to Charles Spencer, the ninth Earl Spencer, the house is open for two months during the summer, with visitors having access to 19 of its many rooms. A stable block contains an exhibition reflecting on the life of the late Diana, Princess of Wales, Charles Spencer's sister. Diana herself is interred on a small island in the middle of a lake in the estate.
