£1.1m Essex coastal work completed
Tendring District Council (TDC) has reopened the lower promenade in Holland-on-Sea, Essex, following work to upgrade coastal defences in the area.
Ipswich-based contractor J Breheny delivered the £1.1m project, which involved a 68m (223ft) stretch of coastline and has been completed in time for the main summer season. The scheme takes TDC's total expenditure on work to improve a 220m (722ft) stretch of coastline to more than £2m over the past 20 months, following a similar project completed last year.
Work has included the provision of full disabled access to the Flag Kiosk Café, while dangerous piles left in the beach from abandoned groynes have been removed. TDC head of technical and procurement services John Ryan said: "There has been a tremendous loss of beach material in the area over the past two years which has left our defences in serious danger of collapse in that particular location."
