£1.1m renovation for Kent leisure centre
A leisure centre in Tenterden, Kent, is to undergo a £1.1m renovation designed to secure its long-term future, after the local authority agreed to fund the scheme.
Ashford Borough Council (ABC) will finance the Tenterden Leisure Centre work, following Tenterden Leisure Trust's successful negotiation of a new contract with Serco Leisure. The new deal between the trust and the leisure provider means that ABC no longer needs to pay an annual operation subsidy of £96,000 towards the venue.
Improvements will include a refurbishment of the swimming changing rooms, the provision of new gym equipment and an upgraded health suite. An underused squash court may also be transformed into a free weights area attached to the main gym area, following consultation with users.
The trust took over the council's contract with Serco in 2002.
