£1.2m Ulverston monument revamp complete
A special event has been held to mark the official relaunch of the Sir John Barrow Monument in Ulverston, Cumbria, which follows the completion of a £1.12m renovation.
The 100ft (30.5m) monument, which was constructed in 1850 to recognise the naval achievements of Sir John Barrow, was closed to the public seven years ago due to water damage. In 2008, Ulverston Town Council was successful in its bid for a grant worth £891,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund towards structural improvements at the monument, which is sited on Hoad Hill.
Council spokesperson Colin Hodgson told the BBC: "Public celebrations marked [the monument's] opening in 1850 and its centenary in 1950 and it is only fitting that a public celebration should mark this next milestone in its colourful history."
