£1.2m cash boost for Plymouth sports scheme
The refurbishment of the UCP Marjon swimming pool is set to receive a £1.2m cash injection from Plymouth City Council to ensure the dual-use provision of the facility.
The project, at the University College Plymouth St Mark and St John (UCP Marjon), is part of a wider rebuild of the site's sports facilities and will also include enlarging the sports centre by 900sq m to 6,253sq m. A council spokesperson said: "Without the council’s investment it is unlikely that UCP Marjon would have continued to provide swimming facilities, but this new partnership arrangement means the University College can completely remodernise the facility and provide vital public swimming provision."
The pool will be available for community use for up to 70 hours a week – up to 10 hours a day – and students can use the pool for around 20 hours a week to meet their curriculum requirements. Without the council’s investment it is unlikely that UCP Marjon would have continued to provide swimming facilities but this new partnership arrangement means the University College can completely remodernise the facility and provide vital public swimming provision in this part of the city.
Other proposed sport facilities at UCP Marjon include a 12-court sports hall, a café, a sports science area, a climbing wall, a 90-station fitness suite, a 12-bed sports injury clinic, a gymnasium and dance studio as well as a new foyer and office space. Councillor Glenn Jordan, cabinet member for community health and leisure, said: "Improving swimming provision in the north of the city is a priority for us and we have been exploring the best and most cost-effective ways of doing it. This partnership arrangement with UCP Marjon is a win-win situation – it means the University College can continue to provide a pool for students and we can provide improved swimming facilities for the public while ensuring the best value for money for Plymouth taxpayers.”
The centre is part of the campus' redevelopment which will also result in new and refurbished student housing, a new entrance, reception and student area. Construction work is expected to start in May and the new pool will open early 2010
