£1.5bn revamp planned for Chelmsford
Chelmsford Borough Council has announced plans for a £1.5bn revamp of the town.
The plans, named Chelmsford Tomorrow, include a cultural quarter with a performance arts complex, an entertainment venue, and ice rink and a leisure centre.
A racecourse is also in the works and is due to open later this year and Essex County Cricket ground is set to undergo a major redevelopment.
Roy Whitehead, leader of the council, said: “Many regeneration projects aim to transform a badly run-down area through renewal. Not so in Chelmsford. We want to make a great town even better.
“Our long term vision is for Chelmsford to become a leading regional centre in the East of England and the economic, cultural, leisure and shopping centre of Essex.”
The council intends to work with private investors and developers, voluntary bodies, central government and the public to help effectuate the scheme, which could be completed by 2016. Details: www.chelmsfordbc.gov.uk
