£16m revamp for Islington swimming baths
The Grade II-listed Ironmonger Row Baths in Islington, North London, is to undergo a major £16m refurbishment in a bid to modernise the venue's facilities in time for the 2012 Olympics.
First opened as a public wash house in 1931, the facility is home to one of the capital's original Turkish baths and is set to benefit from improvements funded by Islington Council and the EC1 New Deal for Communities (NDC) initiative. Facilities which are set to benefit from improvements at Ironmonger Row Baths include a 30m swimming pool, a children's pool, changing facilities, two dance studios and a area for spectators, as well as the Turkish Baths. Plans also include increasing the venue's gym provision.
Ruth Polling, Islington Council's executive member for leisure and equalities, said: "Ironmonger Rows Baths is a wonderful building steeped in history, which we are determined to preserve. "Investing in the venue also means investing in the health and fitness of the community."
Islington Council is contributing £12m towards the scheme, while the EC1 NDC board have committed £3.7m to upgrade the centre, which is operated by Aquaterra on behalf of the council. Work is expected to get underway at the centre next year, with a scheduled completion date of May 2012.
