£16m sports centre for Preston
A £16m sports centre planned for Preston city centre has received final approval.
The University of Central Lancashire's Marsh building on Marsh lane is going to be demolished to make way for the three storey complex, which is due to open in January 2011.
The new complex will feature a sprung timber sports hall with more than 300 retractable bleacher seats, a viewing gallery and changing rooms.
A pre-school will also be built as part of the project – complete with sensory, nature and hard play areas. The school will be able to accommodate up to 90 children aged 6-7 years old.
The complex will also include a number of multi-purpose spaces, able to accommodate activities ranging from sporting events to private functions.
Paul Morris, director of facilities management, said: "The sports centre will be a fantastic development for the university and will enhance the sporting provision we already offer here for the students and staff in Preston."
