£1m to tackle Welsh forestry skills shortage
Forestry Commission Wales (FCW) has announced that a new £1m training initiative is set to launch across the country in a bid to tackle a skills shortage in the forestry sector.
The three-year Focus on Forestry First scheme aims to allow people working within the timber industry to develop free training plans and receive full funding for training courses. FCW has helped to develop the initiative, which will be managed by Rhayader-based MWMAC and has received funding from the Rural Development Plan for Wales 2007-13.
The announcement follows a number of 'resource assessments' that have identified a "serious shortage" of skilled workers in the Welsh forestry sector, which is worth £370m to the nation's economy. Hugh Jones, head of Wales Harvesting and Marketing (WHaM) - FCW's business division, said: "The forest sector offers many opportunities for an exciting and rewarding career but it's essential that the skills required to meet the challenges of providing multi-purpose benefits are encouraged and supported."
The scheme is due to launch on 14 April.
