£25m sports package for Merseyside
Knowsley Council in Merseyside has unveiled a £25m funding package to improve sports and leisure provision across the borough.
The grant will fund a new sports village in Huyton, which will boast an aquatic centre, a sports hall and a gym when it opens in summer 2011.
It will be located alongside a National Lottery-funded MyPlace youth facility — designed in consultation with local youngsters — which could include skateboarding and IT facilities as well as music and arts spaces.
Heatwaves Leisure Centre will be replaced by new community hub in Stockbridge Village comprising leisure facilities and a library, while Prescot Leisure Centre will be refurbished.
The recently opened £12m Kirby Sports Centre will provide new facilities to replace the ageing Scotchbarn Swimming Pool in Prescot and Huyton Leisure Centre in Stockbridge.
Council leader Ron Round said: “I feel very strongly that our residents should have access to the excellent leisure facilities they deserve.
“These new leisure facilities will bring a multitude of benefits. They will have a direct impact on health and wellbeing, providing pleasant places to take part in exercise and sport. They will also give young people places to go and take part in positive activities with friends seven days a week.
“I am happy that, despite these difficult economic times, we are able to take bold decisions like this.”
Knowsley Council is also considering plans to develop Bowring Golf Course.
