£25m swimming complex planned for Luton
Proposals for a £24.9m aquatic centre in Luton have been unveiled by the Borough Council.
Along with an Olympic-sized (50m) swimming pool, the site will boast a diving centre, a sports hall, a fitness suite, an aerobics centre, a café, a crèche and meeting rooms.
Hazel Simmons, leader of Luton Borough Council, said: “Luton deserves a fantastic swimming pool and the facilities associated with a first-class aquatic centre. Developing the health of our residents, both young and old, and investing in the future of potential sports champions is something the council has made a strong commitment to.”
The council will consider whether to take the proposal forward on 17 November and following that, a detailed business plan will be developed. The council hopes the pool will be open by 2012.
David Sparkes, the Amateur Swimming Association’s chief executive, welcomed the news: “We believe the proposals will meet the swimming requirements of the whole community, leading to greater swimming participation in Luton and all the associated health benefits this will give.
“Compared to many other countries, England has a limited number of 50m pools and international diving facilities and so the new pool will form a most welcome aquatic facility for the east of England.”
