£2.5m to continue Birmingham gym scheme
Birmingham's Be Active gym scheme will be continued into 2011-12 after a £2.5m funding package was secured by the NHS and Birmingham City Council (BCC).
The programme, which has attracted more than 300,000 members since its launch, offers all Birmingham residents free swimming, group exercise classes and gym sessions. BCC and the city's four Primary Care Trusts sponsor the Be Active scheme, which supports the national Change 4 Life programme and has increased participation by 10 per cent.
Discussions are also now underway in a bid to secure funding for the programme to extend into 2012-13, which could include commissioning through GPs and private finance deals. BCC cabinet member for leisure, sport and culture Martin Mullaney said: "The people of Birmingham have made this scheme a huge success and the results speak for themselves."
