£2m revitalisation of Scotland’s urban forests
Forestry Commission Scotland has awarded a £2m grant towards 35 urban forestry projects across the country.
The Woods In and Around Towns (WIAT) initiative will revitalise more than 1,600 hectares (4,000acres) of urban woodland.
This scheme will include planting new trees, building new footpaths and bridges, thinning woods to create more accessible space, removing litter and waste, clearing invasive vegetation, creating picnic and recreation areas, improving signage and enhancing community woodland programmes.
Scottish forestry minister Sarah Boyack said: “There is growing awareness that woods in highly populated areas provide more than just recreation opportunities – they contribute to people’s well-being, stimulate new economic activity and investment, generate education opportunities, help benefit the environment and unite communities.”
Five WIAT funding rounds totalling £9.2m have already been committed to more than 100 projects covering 8,000 hectares (19,800 acres) of urban woodland across Scotland. Details: www.forestry.gov.uk
