Great Yarmouth-based Pleasure and Leisure Corporation has submitted a proposal for a £35m casino, hotel and leisure complex to Great Yarmouth Borough Council, after the UK government granted permission for a new large casino to be built in the town.

The council will spend the next six months deciding on Pleasure and Leisure Corporation’s plan for a complex called The Edge on the site of a former caravan holiday park in the South Denes area of town.

Other proposals for casino developments on alternate sites are also being considered, however.

Construction on the winning scheme will not begin until at least 2010, when the council reaches a decision on a casino license.

Albert Jones, managing director of Pleasure and Leisure Corporation, said construction on his plan could begin quickly if approval is granted, making for a potential 2012 opening.

“We have the empty site, planning details, and funding in place,” he said.

Pleasure and Leisure Corporation is partnering with Aspers Casino on the 100,000sq ft (9,290sq m) site, which would contain a 65,000 sq ft casino featuring roulette, gaming tables, slot machines with jackpots up to £4,000, restaurants, bars, a beauty salon, an iPod lounge and live entertainment.

The complex would also include a 180-room hotel, a multiplex cinema and a bowling alley.

The company has architectural firm ColladoCollins on board for the project, and has already signed up potential tenants for the site.

“These tenants are very blue chip companies within the leisure industry,” Jones said.

The development would create around 1,000 new jobs, 450 of them at the casino.

Pleasure and Leisure Corporation, which currently owns Great Yarmouth’s Pleasure Beach attraction, is hoping to attract both tourists and the local community to the casino complex.
