£6m renovation for Swansea art gallery
Swansea Council has announced plans for a £6m redevelopment of the city's Glynn Vivian Art Gallery, which is expected to take two years to complete.
A new 50-seat lecture and screening room is proposed as part of the scheme, which will see the gallery close later this year in order to allow work to be carried out. Structural work is due to commence in early 2012, with other improvements to include more space for the display of collections, a new social space and an extended shop.
Enhanced access to all contemporary and collection galleries and a new IT resource space is also being planned, along with a purpose-built library and research room. Funding for the Glynn Vivian Art Gallery scheme has been provided by the Arts Council of Wales; the Welsh Assembly Government; and Swansea Council.
Graham Thomas, the council's cabinet member for culture, recreation and tourism, said: "The Glynn Vivian Art Gallery is one of Swansea's best attractions but it's become clear in recent times that it needs upgrading. "This scheme will lead to one of the best art galleries of its kind that meets the needs of the 21st century visitor and will be more than capable of attracting the very best exhibitions for viewing."
In October, culture secretary Jeremy Hunt revealed that the Swansea attraction would be one of 18 institutions forming part of a collaborative arts scheme with the Tate.
