£9.7m sports and swimming complex for Leeds Uni
Leeds University has unveiled plans to build a £9.7m swimming pool and fitness complex next to its existing sports centre.
A 200-station fitness suite will be built overlooking a 25m swimming pool with a movable floor. Other facilities will include a sauna and steamroom and a small café.
Pro-vice-chancellor for students and staff Stephen Scott said: “Staff and students have been telling us for years that they’d like a swimming pool and improved fitness facilities, so this is fantastic news.
“It’s a priority for us to provide first-class facilities that will enhance the overall campus experience.”
The complex is part of the university’s £14m programme to reach a top 10 ranking in the British Universities Sports Association by 2015 from its current position at 15th.
The university is in discussions with the city council about possible funding of the pool and to “engage more closely with the community”.
Construction is due to start next year, subject to planning permission. Details: www.leeds.ac.uk
