Hotel fined over Legionnaires’ deaths
The four-star Copthorne Hotel Cardiff has been fined £40,000 after two of its guests died from Legionnaires’ disease.
According to reports, an incorrectly installed humidifier in a buffet unit at the hotel was found to be the source of the outbreak, which occurred between July 1999 and February 2000. Phillip Roberts and Linda Roberts died while five other visitors also fell ill.
At Cardiff Crown Court, the hotel pleaded guilty to two breaches of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974. It was also ordered to pay £15,000 in costs.
Hotel health and safety consultant Christopher Purslow also admitted health and safety charges and was fined £4,000 with £1,000 costs.
The hotel said: “The management at the Copthorne greatly regret the events that occurred in 1999 and beginning 2000 and our sympathies are extended to the families of the deceased and those who became ill.”
